November flew by! Due to Sandy, schedule changes, combined schools, etc. much of our Halloween activities were suddenly interrupted, and by the time everything was back to normal, it was Thanksgiving! Below is a synopsis of the activities we have done throughout the month and continuing into next week.
First Grade- We have been practicing "ta" and "rest" with rhythm card and Eurhythmics movement activities. We are getting ready to identify "Sol," "Mi," and "La." We can hear and identify 3 different pitches in "Apple Tree," and have used the Smart Board to place the pitches on different levels of tree branches. We also have done some vocal exploration with Ms. Hunter's friend Bert the Turkey, and sang "I'm A Very Fine Turkey."
Second Grade- We are becoming experts on "ta," "ta/ti," and "rest." We have been sight-reading rhythm patterns on the board at the beginning of class in groups, for a friendly competition. We will be identifying "Mi," "Re," and "Do," soon. We have learned and been playing the chase game "Let Us Chase the Squirrel," and the hiding/seeking game "Closet Key." In "Closet Key," we used dynamics to help our friends find the hidden key. We also practiced singing at different dynamic levels while marching to "Sally Go 'Round the Sun." We also learned Bert the Turkey's dance with "A Turkey Named Bert."
Third Grade- We are very good at reading music with "ta," "ta/ti," "tu," and "rest." ("Takatiki" is coming soon!) We can read the "Pumpkin Pie" chant from standard notation (minus the 16th notes- takatiki), and are ready to play Orff instrument parts from standard notation for "Harvest Dance." We learned two circle dances this month. "Harvest Dance" is based on an Israeli folk dance and melody, which we have performed with recordings and with Thanksgiving-themed lyrics. "Tideo" is a concentric circle play-party.
Fourth Grade/Chorus- We have started using more of our general music class time to make up for lost Chorus rehearsal time. Students are working hard for our December concert and are very excited to perform for the first time as an ensemble. We have made a lot of progress singing in 2 parts with "Let it Shine," "Ocho Kandelikas," and "Happy Holidays." We also added some movement to each song. Please encourage your fourth grader to share our songs with you and practice with the "4th grade chorus page." The more comfortable they are with the music, the more fun they will have during the performance!
Happy Thanksgiving!
